News from "Summit of the Horse" Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JOHN FALEN; CHARLIE STENHOLM SPEAK TO THE POLITICS OF LAND AND HORSES DURING DAY TWO OF 'SUMMIT OF THE HORSE' EVENT

LAS VEGAS...John Falen, president of the Public Lands Council says reopening horse processing plants in the United States and harvesting should be one of the solutions to solve the over populated horse problem. Falen opened the morning session of Day Two at the first Summit of the Horse event in Las Vegas at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa
Falen a commercial cow-calf operator from Orovada, Nev., has served on numerous boards and committees, many for more than 20 years including president of the Nevada Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), NCBA Wild Horse and Burro Committee and the Wild Horse and Burro Mustang Heritage Foundation.
"Public land ranchers are not only the stewards of our rangelands and providers of food and fiber for our nation," Falen says, "they represent and promote the great American tradition of freedom."
Charlie Stenholm, a retired 13-term U.S. House of Representative from Texas, was for six years, a ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee. After leaving Congress, Stenholm became a spokesperson on behalf of agriculture, including the horse meat industry.
He said that this first horse summit gave those in the horse industry a real opportunity to come up with common-sense solution.
"Hey, I'm a Blue dog Democrat and if you have a solution, I'm going to work with you," Stenholm said. "We need to educate our new U.S. Congress and remind them that we believe in free enterprise in this country."
Stenholm emphasized that the federal government should have no jurisdiction over a state's ability to reopen a horse processing plant for human consumption.
"There are nine million horses consumed around the world: China, Russia and so many European countries," he said. "Why can't we sell our product to them?"
Reopening horse processing plants in the United States is one of the economic boosts Stenholm believes rural America needs. He believed that within six months of reopening even five to six plants, more than 1,000 jobs could be created and another 300,000 jobs that revolve around the horse industry could be saved.
"The way it is now, livestock sale yards have either closed or can't even guarantee a horse owner that they can sell their horses," he said. "Worse yet, many horses are just brought to the yards and abandoned."
Stenholm reiterated that it was the consensus of the horse industry that all animals, not just horses should be treated humanely from birth to death.
"I'm opposed to horses getting mistreated and we need to continue to educate the American people that we are serious about all of animal production," he said. "I credit American Humane for educating the general population and implore all the industry to continue."
The Summit of the Horse continues through Jan 6. U.S. Wheat Associates Hires Assistant Director of Policy

ARLINGTON, Virginia – U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) welcomes Tyler Jameson as Assistant Director of Policy in its Arlington, VA, headquarters effective Jan. 10, 2011. Jameson will provide support for trade policy issues, food aid, biotechnology and trade with sanctioned countries. He will also serve as a liaison to partner organizations and other trade associations. Most recently, Jameson worked as a legislative assistant for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture.

“We are excited to have Tyler join our policy department,” USW Director of Policy Shannon Schlecht said. “His knowledge of agricultural trade initiatives and experience will enable us to expand our ability to monitor and influence policy issues affecting U.S. wheat exports.”

In his position with the House Ag Committee, Jameson monitored developments in the United States Department of Agriculture’s export promotion programs, including the Market Access Program (MAP) and the Foreign Market Development (FMD) program. He was also involved with sanctioned country trade legislation and monitored regulations impacting the trade of goods produced through biotechnology. In addition, Jameson coordinated a congressional delegation to Asia to promote U.S. agricultural trade.

Jameson earned his bachelor’s degrees in political science and sociology from Shepherd University in his home state of West Virginia, where he grew up on a small farm.

USW is the industry’s market development organization working in more than 100 countries on behalf of America's wheat producers. The activities of USW are made possible by producer checkoff dollars managed by 19 state wheat commissions and through cost-share funding provided by USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. For more information, visit www.uswheat.org or contact your state wheat commission.

News regarding ANTIQUE TRACTOR PRESERVATION DAY as a National Day of Celebration and Ag History Education from The Antique Tractor Show organization. This is an example of how important heritage preservation is for the agriculture industry.

January 02, 2011

Greetings, Congresswoman Emerson:
It is with great honor and respect that I contact you seeking assistance with obtaining a Presidential response. My family and I are residents of the City of West Plains, MO and are proud to call it home. We are passionate about giving back to our Community and working to build economic development.

In 2010, we created as a family an internationally recognized website: http://www.theantiquetractorshow.com/  followed by the first ever in the United States - State recognized Antique Tractor Preservation Day [September 23, 2010] http://www.theantiquetractorshow.com/blog/index.php/?p=17

In the fall of 2010, I wrote to President Barack Obama three (3) times asking that he consider issuing a Presidential Proclamation designating ANTIQUE TRACTOR PRESERVATION DAY as a National Day of Celebration and Ag History Education; in tribute to the tractors’ importance to our Nation’s rich agricultural and farm machinery heritage. Regrettably, to-date none of my inquiries to the President have been answered or acknowledged.

I appreciate any assistance/communications your Office can offer to help me receive a follow-up response.  I continue to work to build interest in the preservation of antique tractors; as well as to create increased tourism for the State of Missouri, the Ozarks Region, and Community of West Plains, MO - effectively stimulating our State’s economy. Recently, I was appointed to a two (2) year term on the City of West Plains, MO Tourism Development Advisory Council: http://www.theantiquetractorshow.com/blog/index.php/?p=481

Thank you and kindest regards,
Michael Hinton
